A first-person account of the Nez Perce War of 1877, as related by Yellow Wolf, one of the last Nez Perce warriors, to McWhorter during the years preceding Yellow Wolf's death in 1935. Following their meeting in 1907, McWhorter devoted many years to researching the conflict through Native oral testimony, correspondence, photographs, documentary records, and personal visits to the battle sites. The book presents the war from the Nez Perce perspective, including Yellow Wolf's detailed recollections of the Nez Perce flight from Idaho into Montana, the battles at White Bird Canyon and the Big Hole, and the eventual surrender of Chief Joseph and his people. It also includes extensive notes by McWhorter and an appendix containing more than a dozen eyewitness narratives by individuals who witnessed the Battle of the Big Hole.
