Notes

Educated in Manitoba and employed as a preacher in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Tommy Douglas (1904-1986) became a prominent prairie politician. He served five terms as Premier of Saskatchewan and was leader of both the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation and New Democratic Party. This volume contains excerpts from 35 speeches given by Douglas throughout his political career. The speeches demonstrate Douglas’ politics, expressing his stance on topics such as socialism and civil rights. The book also traces Douglas’ response to provincial, federal, and global issues ranging from Medicare to the October Crisis. Editor L. D. Lovick provides a brief contextual introduction to each speech and opens the volume with a biography of Douglas.
