Notes

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) was the 26th President of the United States (1901–1909). Before his presidency, he spent four years in the Dakota Badlands (1883–1887), where he invested in cattle ranching and immersed himself in the working life of a ranch hand.

Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail draws upon these experiences. The volume recounts Roosevelt’s years at the Maltese Cross and Elkhorn ranches along the Little Missouri River, describing daily ranch work, cattle drives, hunting expeditions, and encounters with cowboys, hunters, and other frontier figures.
