Notes

In this volume, former President of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society Margaret Mann recounts a 1922 conflict between the Brandon School Board and its teachers. In February, the Board announced a substantial pay reduction followed by the termination of all contracts (with budget-adjusted contracts beginning May 1). Rejecting the terms, all teachers under the Board’s employ were dismissed on April 30. Mann explains the factors behind the Board’s proposal, examines media coverage of the dismissals, sketches the Board’s attempts to find replacement teachers, and traces the post-dismissal careers of various teachers. Throughout, she relies on newspaper coverage as well as documents produced by both the Teachers’ Society (then, the Manitoba Teachers’ Federation) and Brandon School Board. Errata slip.
