The River [Helen Humphreys]

A reflective work centered on a stretch of Depot Creek at the headwaters of the Napanee River in Ontario, observed by the author over the course of many years. Combining close observation with elements of natural history, local history, and narrative reconstruction, the book records seasonal change along the river and notes its plants, wildlife, and human uses. Humphreys approaches the river as a subject to be known on its own terms, drawing on a range of literary forms—observation, historical record, and imaginative narrative—to document the landscape and its transformations.
