The Other Natives: The / Les Métis. Volume II (1885–1978)
Volume II continues the history of the Métis people from 1885 to the late twentieth century. It addresses the aftermath of the 1885 Resistance, including the dispossession and scrip process, and considers these developments from multiple perspectives. The volume also examines relations between Métis communities and French-speaking Canadians, and discusses early proposals for a designated Métis settlement.
Further sections include a sociological overview of the Métis of Manitoba to 1959, followed by an ethnographic study of a contemporary Métis community with particular attention to educational and economic conditions. The work concludes with accounts of Métis political organization, including the Manitoba Métis Federation and Métis women’s initiatives, and a consideration of questions of identity in modern Métis society.
