Herman Linder (1907-2001)

Herman Linder, born in Wisconsin and raised near Cardston, Alberta, was one of the most accomplished rodeo cowboys of his era. Turning professional in the late 1920s, he went on to dominate Canadian rodeo for over a decade. Between 1929 and 1938, Linder won 22 titles at the Calgary Stampede, including six consecutive all-round cowboy championships.

He competed across North America and internationally, representing Canada in England (1934) and Australia (1936). After retiring from competition in 1939, Linder remained active in the sport, helping to organize and promote rodeos alongside leading figures of the time. His legacy earned him induction into multiple rodeo halls of fame.

The Linder Legend : The Story Of Pro Rodeo And Its Champion. By Harald Gunderson is an anecdote-rich biographical account of Herman Linder, widely known as the "King of the Cowboys." Blending personal stories with historical context, the work traces Linder’s rise to prominence in professional rodeo and explores his lasting impact on the sport in Canada and beyond.
