Notes

Pegahmagabow, Francis (1889–1952). A distinguished member of the Ojibwe Nation, born in Shawanaga, Ontario, Francis Pegahmagabow is remembered as the most decorated Indigenous soldier in Canadian military history and among the most accomplished snipers of the First World War. Enlisting at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, Pegahmagabow served with extraordinary distinction overseas. Upon his return, he settled in Wasauksing, Ontario, where he devoted the remainder of his life to political leadership and advocacy for Indigenous self-determination.

A compilation of oral narratives and autobiographical recollections, this volume presents the life and legacy of Francis Pegahmagabow in his own words. The text preserves Pegahmagabow’s original Ojibwe-language storytelling, accompanied by English translations.
