Notes

Account of Captain John Palliser's travels in eastern Montana and western North Dakota during 1847–1848. Born in County Waterford, Ireland, Palliser was drawn to the North American West by contemporary frontier narratives and spent nine months travelling through present-day Montana and the upper Missouri region, accompanied only by his dog and local guides. His narrative records hunting expeditions, encounters with Indigenous peoples and traders, and observations of the prairie landscape, wildlife, and daily life on the frontier.
