Notes

An examination of the little-known group of upper-class British men sent to Canada beginning in the 1880s after failing to find a place within British society. Supported by family allowances, or “remittances,” these second and later sons were encouraged to make new lives in the Canadian West, often as farmers, ranchers, or adventurers, with mixed and frequently disappointing results. Drawing on individual case studies, the book traces their backgrounds, motives for exile, daily lives, and interactions with Canadian society.
