Notes

In the summer of 1900, Dr. O. C. Edwards accompanied the commission sent to obtain the adhesion of northern communities to Treaty 8 following the previous year's negotiations. His diary records a five-and-a-half-month journey across northern Alberta, documenting travel, settlements, and the people encountered along the commission's route.

Published here with editorial notes by David Leonard and Beverly Whalen, the diary traces travel over the Klondike Trail, down the Peace River, and up the Athabasca River while recording daily life in the region at the turn of the twentieth century. Edwards' account is complemented by historical photographs taken during the expedition, maps, and annotations.
