Being a diary kept during Grant’s journey as secretary to an exploratory expedition led by Sandford Fleming, Engineer-in-Chief of the Canadian Pacific and Intercolonial Railways, undertaken in 1872 to investigate possible routes for a transcontinental railway. Beginning at Halifax, Nova Scotia, the expedition travelled westward through the Great Lakes region, the Canadian Prairies, and the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific coast at Vancouver. Grant provides detailed observations of the landscape, geography, Indigenous peoples, settlements, and difficulties of travel across the country.
