Notes

This volume traces the life and career of William McGillivray, a prominent figure in the North West Company from his entry into the fur trade as a clerk to his rise to partnership and, from 1799 to 1821, his position as chief superintendent of the company. Campbell examines McGillivray’s involvement in the North American fur trade, his rivalry with competing interests including the Hudson’s Bay Company and Astor’s enterprises, and the conflicts surrounding the North West Company’s eventual merger with the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1821.
