Notes

A dual biography of Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont, examining their roles in the political and military struggles of the Métis in the late nineteenth century. The work traces Riel’s leadership in the establishment of Manitoba and his later return from exile, as well as Dumont’s activities as a hunter, organizer, and field commander.

Set against the background of the North-West Rebellion of 1885, the narrative considers the differing perspectives and actions of the two men in their efforts to address Métis grievances with the Canadian government under John A. Macdonald. The volume follows the course of the conflict, including engagements such as Duck Lake and Fish Creek, and concludes with Riel’s trial and execution and Dumont’s flight to the United States.

Issued as part of Penguin Canada’s “Extraordinary Canadians” series.
