Offley, United States Cavalry, retired. His notes have been reproduced here, just as he wrote them, on the page margins, in his own hand."

Notes

A study of the Battle of the Little Bighorn based largely on testimony presented at the Court of Inquiry convened at the request of Major Marcus A. Reno. The investigation, undertaken following allegations concerning Reno’s conduct, reviewed the actions of officers and men serving under George Armstrong Custer during the engagement.

Drawing on the recorded evidence, the author reconstructs the sequence of events leading up to and during the battle. The work aims to present an account grounded in primary testimony and to clarify disputed aspects of the engagement.

Notes adapted from the Preface.
