Notes

Footprints in the Dust, by Douglas Light, presents a chronological, diary-style narrative of the months surrounding the North-West Resistance, with particular attention to the events before, during, and after the Battle of Cut Knife Hill. The account unfolds day by day, beginning January 9, 1885, and concluding November 27 of the same year, offering a steady, ground-level view of the conflict as it developed. Drawing on Light’s lifelong involvement with western Canadian museums and his upbringing in Battleford, Saskatchewan, the work is informed by personal acquaintance with several figures connected to the Resistance, including William Blasdell Cameron, Marie Rose Sayer, Salomon and William Pritchard, and others with firsthand experience of events.
