Folk Furniture Of Canada's Doukhobor's, Hutterites, Mennonites And Ukrainians

Folk furniture provides a record of the domestic traditions of four religious and cultural communities that settled in Western Canada: Doukhobors, Hutterites, Mennonites and Ukrainians. Drawing on traditions brought from Europe and Russia, their furnishings reflect differing approaches to religious belief, communal life, household practice and decorative design.

John Fleming and Michael Rowan examine the historical origins of each community, its housing and domestic arrangements, and the forms and decoration of its furniture. More than 100 colour photographs by James Chambers illustrate chests, tables, benches, chairs, beds, cradles and other household objects.
