Notes

Jenish’s biography examines the life and work of surveyor and cartographer David Thompson, whose travels across western and northwestern North America between 1784 and 1812 resulted in the first comprehensive map of roughly 1.2 million square miles of territory extending from Hudson Bay to the Pacific coast. Drawing on Thompson’s journals and notebooks, the work follows his service with the Hudson’s Bay Company and later the North West Company, describing his extensive canoe and overland journeys, astronomical observations, and surveying methods.
