Notes

Published to accompany the 2004 exhibition of the same name mounted by the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, this volume examines the gallery's design within the broader development of Modernist architecture in Saskatchewan. Curated by architect Bernard Flaman, with Jeff Howlett and Dan Ring, the exhibition considered the architectural influences, cultural setting, and design principles that shaped the 1964 building by Winnipeg architects Blankstein, Coop, Gillmor and Hanna. Through the study of eight representative buildings, the book explores the emergence of Modernism in the province and the architectural context in which the Mendel Art Gallery was conceived.
