Notes

Alexandre-Antonin Taché (1823–1894), an early member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, arrived in the Red River settlement in 1845 and became bishop, and later archbishop, of St. Boniface, playing a central role in the development of the Catholic Church and in the religious and political life of the Canadian North-West during a period of significant transition.

A scholarly biography examining Taché’s life and career within the wider context of nineteenth-century western Canadian history, with particular attention to his efforts to promote French Catholic institutions and his involvement in major events and controversies of the period.
