Notes

Born to Syrian immigrants who established a homestead in southwestern Saskatchewan during the 1920s, Habeeb Salloum spent his childhood on the Canadian prairie, where his family's experiences of dryland farming, drought, and rural settlement shaped both his outlook and his lifelong interest in food and history. Drawing on memories of his parents' Syrian heritage and prairie homestead life, he recounts the experiences of a small immigrant community whose story forms a distinctive part of western Canadian settlement.

This new edition combines the author's memoir with more than 200 recipes reflecting the culinary traditions of Syrian-Lebanese immigrants and their adaptation to prairie life. Family recollections accompany recipes for traditional dishes prepared with ingredients available on the Canadian plains.
