Notes

After starting at the Saskatoon Star Phoenix engraving zinc plates for printing, Ed Sebestyen became the newspaper’s editorial cartoonist in the mid-1950s (eventually rising to editorial and management positions and receiving an Order of Canada appointment in 1993). The Star Phoenix published four volumes of Sebestyen’s cartoons from 1959-1962, the first being “An Assortment of Sebestyen.” This 17 x 23 cm (6.75 x 9 in) book contains selected 1958 and 1959 cartoons depicting local, provincial, and national news items ranging from Nutana residents complaining about stockyard odours in Saskatoon to the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
