Notes

Canadian North-West Historical Society Publications Vol. 1 No. 3. The Canadian North-West Historical Society was founded in 1924 (as the Battleford Historical Society) to preserve the Battleford area’s history, in part by publishing accounts of life in the region prior to 1890. This volume contains several articles detailing the growth of the Anglican Church in western Canada as well as Edward K. Matheson’s life as a student, Anglican missionary, and teacher in the North-West. Born at the Red River settlement and active in Prince Albert, Lethbridge, and Battleford, Matheson’s influence on Anglican missions (especially amongst Cree communities and in the Battleford area) was considerable. The book’s contents are divided between writings by Matheson (recollecting events and figures in the North-West) and writings about Matheson and his family. Note Matheson’s role as Principal of Battleford Industrial Residential School from 1895-1914. Peel(3) 5170.
