Notes

A substantial report prepared in the mid-1970s, sponsored by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indians, and issued as an alternative assessment to the Government of Saskatchewan’s Socio-Economic Impact Report on the Churchill River study. It examines the anticipated social, economic, and environmental consequences of a proposed hydro-electric development at Wintego Rapids on the Churchill River system in northern Saskatchewan.

Focusing on the Cree communities of the Peter Ballantyne and Lac La Ronge Bands, the study draws on community-based research, oral testimony, and economic analysis to document patterns of land use, subsistence activity, and local production. It considers the projected effects of large-scale flooding associated with the scheme, including disruption to hunting, fishing, and settlement areas, and addresses implications for treaty rights and continued access to resources.
