Notes

George Littlechild is a Plains Cree artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries across western Canada and throughout North America. Littlechild has written and illustrated several children’s books telling Cree stories or addressing First Nations life in contemporary Canada. In this volume, Littlechild’s art – along with brief commentary and questions for young readers –depicts the hardships that he and his ancestors faced following the arrival of Europeans in North America. From historical events (loss of land in Treaty settlements, coming of the North West Mounted Police) to contemporary feelings of alienation and musings on First Nations identities, Littlechild’s paintings contrast Indigenous existence before and after encounters with Europeans.
