Notes

This facsimile copy of A. L. Haydon’s 1910 “The Riders of the Plains” traces Canada’s North-West Mounted Police’s history through four decades, beginning in 1873. The volume describes the force’s arrival in a changing west, their organization and leadership, their duties, and their interactions with settlers and First Nations communities. Conflicts between indigenous groups, growing discord between the Métis and the Canadian government, and the 1885 North-West Resistance feature prominently in early chapters. Accounts of service in both the Yukon and South Africa also appear, as well as explanations of mundane elements of the Police (recruitment, patrolling, and barracks life, etc.). Appendices contain statistics and officer lists. Throughout, plates and fold-out maps visualize the activities, composition, and movement of the force. This edition includes an introduction by former Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner George B. McLellan.
