Notes

During WWI, Ukrainian Canadians were detained in internment camps across the country as “enemy aliens.” In the 1980s, the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association sought redress from the federal government. This volume presents news media and government publications discussing Ukrainian Canadian internment and the desired redress. The articles, editorials, and letters to the editor cover 1984-1994 and come from papers across Canada (also the Ukrainian Weekly of Jersey City). The section containing government committee proceedings and House of Commons debates offers a brief look into the government’s response to Ukrainian Canadian petitions. In addition to describing internment conditions during WWI, the book sheds light on public opinion towards problematic treatments of minority groups by the federal government in Canada’s past, and the effects of that treatment on present legislation. Text in English (primarily) and French.
