Notes

A biographical study of Red Crow (c. 1830–1900), head chief of the Kainai (Blood) tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The volume traces his life from his youth as a warrior on the northern Plains through his emergence as a principal leader and signatory to Treaty Seven, and his tenure as head chief from 1870 to 1900.

Dempsey follows Red Crow’s role in guiding his people through the decline of the buffalo economy and the transition to reserve life in southern Alberta, examining his leadership in matters of diplomacy, relations with the Canadian government, land, education, agriculture, and the maintenance of traditional practices.
