Notes

This booklet contains short historical articles written in 2009-10 by Humboldt & District Museum & Gallery director Jennifer Hoesgen in support of Original Humboldt, a historic site southwest of the Saskatchewan town of Humboldt. Hoesgen describes Original Humboldt as the location of the first Humboldt Telegraph Station built in 1878 along the Carlton Trail, as well as the site’s role as a fortified military post during the 1885 North-West Resistance. The booklet addresses issues of communication, settlement, and conflict in the North-West from a variety of perspectives. Hoesgen uses historical records to recreate the life of a telegraph station agent, trace the supply lines of General Middleton’s forces, and recount a winter journey from Humboldt to Prince Albert to bury a young girl. The volume begins and ends with descriptions of recent archaeological and heritage work at Original Humboldt.
