Notes

Gardiner, James Garfield (1883–1962).
Twice served as Premier of Saskatchewan (1926–1929, 1934–1935) and held the federal post of Minister of Agriculture for 22 years under Prime Ministers Mackenzie King and Louis St. Laurent. A dominant figure in Prairie Liberal politics, Gardiner was known for his organizational skill, agrarian focus, and uncompromising partisanship. He played a central role in shaping national agricultural policy during the Great Depression and World War II, and was a candidate for the federal Liberal leadership in 1948. Defeated in 1958, he retired to his farm in Lemberg, Saskatchewan.

Signed by James G. Gardiner on the blank front endpaper in a particularly fine and elegant hand. An excellent example of period penmanship.
