Notes

In this slim volume, Peter Dodson (author of several works on Treaty signings) describes the circumstances that forced two Cree leaders – Little Pine and Lucky Man – to add their names as signatories to Treaty 6 in 1879. Dodson recounts their early opposition to Treaty 6, but cites the buffalo’s disappearance as a source of significant hardship amongst Little Pine and Lucky Man’s followers that compelled both to sign the Treaty. Dodson then traces Little Pine and Lucky Man’s efforts to secure reserve land in the Cyprus Hills region and hold the government to its Treaty obligations. Finally, the volume outlines the two leaders’ roles in attempts to unite dissatisfied Indigenous groups against unfair government treatment. A succinct account of the complex pressures and politics surrounding Treaty signing in western Canada. Includes endnotes and bibliography.
