Notes

Ronald Rees is a former University of Saskatchewan geography professor and author whose books range from histories of New Brunswick to studies of industrialization in Wales. In this volume, Rees surveys landscape paintings of Canada’s prairies by more than 40 artists. The book opens by tracing the prairie's changing portrayal in art from pristine wilderness through pioneer frontier to modern muse. Rees offers brief biographies of major prairie artists, discussing differences in art schools and techniques. The volume contains more than 80 full-page color prints, including early 1800s portrayals of fur trading by Paul Rindisbacher, mid-1900s work by Group of Seven member A. Y. Jackson, watercolors by Reta Cowley, and Allen Sapp’s depiction of life on reserves. Includes bibliography and index.
