Notes

In 1921, Cecil F. Patterson joined the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Horticulture and Forestry. Until 1942 he was the department’s only staff/faculty member and – in addition to teaching – oversaw the University’s landscaping. Lacking a suitable textbook on growing fruit in western Canada, he wrote and published “Hardy Fruits.” The volume focusses on cultivating fruit – from apples to gooseberries – in prairie conditions. For each fruit, Patterson discusses its botanical classes, planting conditions, propagation and pruning, and relevant pests and diseases. Topical chapters on nurseries, gardens, watering, climate, breeding for improvement, and dealing with pests and diseases also appear. Peel(3) 6034.
