Exhibition catalogue issued in conjunction with a retrospective exhibition organized by the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina, 20 January–26 February 1984. The exhibition was the first large-scale presentation of Edmund Morris’s work since 1928, assembling portraits of First Nations subjects, western landscapes, and drawings.
Recognized during his lifetime as a painter of Indigenous portraiture, Morris was noted for his attentive treatment of his sitters and detailed rendering of dress and material culture. Between 1907 and 1910 he made annual trips to Saskatchewan and Alberta, and many of the portraits reproduced in this catalogue date from that period.
Notes adapted from Geoffrey Simmins’ catalogue essays.
