Notes

Carl Beam (1943–2005) was born on Manitoulin Island. He began his art studies at the Kootenay School of Art in 1971, later transferring to the University of Victoria, where he earned his BFA. He went on to receive his MFA from the University of Alberta.
Beam’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the National Gallery of Canada’s Indigena: Perspectives of Indigenous Peoples on Five Hundred Years in 1992. His contributions to Canadian art were recognized with his induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts in 2000, and with the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2005.
This catalogue accompanies the 2010 retrospective held at the National Gallery of Canada.
