Notes

The North-West Resistance of 1885 culminated in the trial of Louis Riel, who was charged with high treason for his role in the movement against the Canadian government. Tried in Regina, Riel faced prosecution for his leadership of the provisional government and its armed resistance.

This volume presents the transcript of Riel’s trial, with an introduction by Desmond Morton. It records the legal arguments, witness testimony, and evidence presented by the prosecution and defence, including testimony from North-West Mounted Police officers, military personnel, doctors, and Catholic priests.
