Ownership inscription to the blank front endpaper. Mild staining through the text block. Edges stained and tanned. Dust jacket with large areas of loss to the front panel and spine, with additional chipping, closed and open tears, and staining.

First published in 1908, The Empire Builders was Robert Stead's first published collection of poetry. In his foreword, Stead describes the poems as “western and patriotic verse,” reflecting the author's interest in the Canadian West and contemporary national themes. The collection was subsequently revised during the First World War, when selected poems from the earlier editions were combined with newer, more militant verse and published under different titles in Canada and Britain. With the return of peacetime, Stead restored the original title for this fifth edition, bringing together the earlier poems with material added during the war years.
