Notes

W. L. Morton’s history of Manitoba traces the province’s development from the early seventeenth-century fur trade around Hudson Bay to the mid-twentieth century. The narrative examines immigration and settlement, relations among Manitoba’s diverse national and religious communities, the development of its economic and social institutions, and the growth of provincial political consciousness. Particular attention is given to Winnipeg and to the competing east-west and north-south orientations that shaped the province’s development. Morton also considers political, constitutional, social, and cultural history within the broader course of Manitoba’s growth.
