Notes

Study of the transatlantic mail service between Great Britain and Canada from the colonial period to 1889, with particular attention to the development of packet and steamship routes carrying Canadian mail. The authors trace the evolution of service through the era of Cunard steamships from 1840 onward and examine the changing role of major carriers, including the Allan Line, whose monopoly ended in 1889. Included are detailed sailing lists for both sailing and steam packets intended to assist in identifying routes and transit histories associated with specific postal covers. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of postal covers, cancellations, and route markings relating to rates and mail carriage.
