Alex Janvier was born on February 28, 1935, on the Le Goff Reserve in northern Alberta. A celebrated artist his work is recognized for its vibrant forms and deep connection to Indigenous experience. His career spanned several decades, during which he became a leading figure in contemporary art in Canada. Janvier passed away on July 10, 2024.

Published to accompany the National Gallery of Canada exhibition "Alex Janvier", held from November 25, 2016, through April 17, 2017. This exhibition catalogue documents a major retrospective of the artist’s work. The volume brings together a wide range of Janvier’s paintings and drawings, highlighting both his early development and mature style.
